OUR HISTORY

people helped

1948

The Gold Cross is the first endeavour created by Paul-Émile Léger to assist victims of the Second World War in Europe. Its mission is to help children in need throughout the world by providing health care, training and literacy programs.

1962

The Cardinal Léger Institute for Health was created during a mission in Cameroon. Its objective is to promote health and fight against endemic diseases, such as leprosy, malaria, tuberculosis, tetanus, polio and AIDS.

1969

Cardinal Léger and his Institute broaden the mission of their early work. This new subsidiary aims to reduce poverty by promoting the appropriation of sustainable development within local communities.

1981

The Jules et Paul-Émile Léger Foundation was created on December 18, 1981, by a special act of the Canadian Parliament. This exceptional gesture pays tribute to two great humanists: Paul-Émile Léger, Cardinal Archbishop of Montreal, and his brother Jules Léger, Ambassador of Canada abroad (19531964) and Governor General of Canada (19741979).

2008

To celebrate 60 years since Cardinal Léger began his efforts, the Jules and Paul-Émile Léger Foundation and their associated initiatives unify under a new name: LÉGER FOUNDATION.

2019

The LÉGER FOUNDATION aims to update its image and expand its reach across all generations with a makeover and a new name: Mission inclusion.
