Humanitarian assistance to displaced populations

April 2017 – March 2019

BACKGROUND

Cameroon’s Far North Region is in the grip of a crisis that is directly impacting nearly 1.5 million people. As of September 2016, an estimated 228,109 people had taken refuge there after fleeing violence unleashed by the Boko Haram insurgency. Since 2013, the terrorist group has stepped up its campaign and perpetrated a wave of attacks, massacres, suicide bombings, kidnappings, looting and total destruction of villages.

As the climate of violence has worsened, food insecurity has reached critical levels in Far North. The level of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) now exceeds the emergency threshold of 15%. Approximately 40,000 children suffer from it. Most of the displaced and vulnerable people, who previously had a livelihood, are unable to resume their activities and therefore cannot meet their basic needs.

Mission Inclusion’s 2017 humanitarian operation is a logical continuation of our 2016 integrated assistance project for displaced persons and host populations affected by violence in Far North Region, funded by Global Affairs Canada.

OUR PROJECT

Implemented in partnership with CDD-Caritas de Maroua-Mokolo, this project aims to meet the emergency needs of 40,185 displaced persons affected by Boko Haram violence.
It pays particular attention to the inclusion, participation and empowerment of women and girls, and of the marginalized groups most affected by the crisis. This approach also addresses prevention of gender-based violence.
This initiative has already helped meet urgent needs for:
► safe drinking water
► emergency sustenance
► basic health care
The project also aims to equip people to deal with future crises by:
► strengthening the resilience and self-sufficiency of farmers and producers
► revitalizing economic activity by supporting small entrepreneurs
