La Piaule, a pioneering organization in street work in Quebec, passionately works to support people in vulnerable situations. With the backing of Mission inclusion, La Piaule has implemented an innovative project to assist seniors facing vulnerability in Drummondville.

Challenges Faced by Vulnerable Seniors

In response to the growing challenges of poverty, precarity, and isolation faced by vulnerable seniors, La Piaule has expanded its team with a dedicated worker for the elderly. The initiative aims to prevent the deterioration of living conditions by breaking isolation, supporting, and assisting seniors in their efforts.

Human stories are at the heart of this project. Vulnerable seniors rediscover hope and motivation to reconnect with their community and take care of their health thanks to the comforting and attentive presence of the street worker. Shared moments during informal outings to the park or cafe, or conversations on public benches, provide opportunities to break isolation and foster a positive impact on mental health and anxiety management.

A Complementary Approach to Existing Services with Results That Surpass Expectations

By developing an intervention approach complementary to existing services, La Piaule reaches vulnerable seniors not served by traditional health networks. The street worker contributes to housing retention, searching for suitable residences, and supports individuals in using technology.

This project deeply affects the lives of many vulnerable seniors. In total, 998 interventions were carried out with 99 different individuals, far exceeding initial expectations. Over 137 accompaniments were made to health and social service institutions, and 116 referrals were made to partner community organizations.
